Fire
- You should install at least one smoke alarm in your property
- Keep all electrical flexes off cooker rings or hobs
- Electrical sockets should not be overloaded
- Never move or refuel an oil or gas heater while it is lighting
Water
- All pipes and tanks should be fully lagged
- Most damage tends to occur while people are away so turn off water supply before you leave
- Under-floor water damage can be more extensive than appears
Flood Damage
- Your insurance is important in recovering from flood loss so calling your broker or loss assessor is vital in assessing the full extent of damage
Physical Risks
- Turn off electricity and avoid main power lines
- You should keep warm especially the elderly
- People who are vulnerable and prone to infections should avoid the area until clean-up is complete
Structural Problems
- Be aware of slippery surfaces
- Tiles and slates should be checked to avoid further damage
- Effluent from water (whatever the source) will spoil soft furnishings, food and cosmetics
